Hannah Glawson Makes National Rifle Team

By Janice Christie SHEET HARBOUR: Hannah Glawson was eleven years old when she first became interested in joining Cadet Corps 2610 and did so as soon as she turned twelve. She had watched her brother, Nick, an active member of the Corps, and he motivated her to join. Glawson, now sixteen, has spent the past five years with forty-five other cadets, ranging in ages from 12-18, attending one evening a week in class and every second Thursday participating in a Sports Night. The shooting team practices consistently on Sundays. Cadet Corps 2610 is under the direction of Captain James Scrivens.

Big Crowd for Lions Turkey Dinner

There wasn’t a free seat in sight on Saturday afternoon at the “Thanksgiving Sit-down Dinner" put on by the Musquodoboit Harbour Lions Club and the Eastern Shore Food Bank. The parking lot filled early, and there dozens more cars parked along the road. Inside, there was turkey with all the fixings, capped off with a delicious piece of pumpkin pie. In the invitation to the event, the Lions said they hoped people would “bring your friends and family from all over the community;" from the looks of the crowded room, that’s exactly what people did.

They are all subjects of films made by Rex Tasker, a documentary filmmaker, editor, writer, producer, and director who worked for the National Film Board of Canada for thirty-two years. Beating the Blue Bag Blues

A recent rash of more than a dozen blue bag rejection notices along East and West Petpeswick in Musquodoboit Harbour got Cooperator readers wondering whether HRM Recycling was targeting the area. Coming home and finding your trash still sitting there is bad enough, but people reported that although there were rejection tags on their bags, in many cases there was no indication of what was offensive in the bag.

Tangier Parish 150th: "Movers and Shakers"

By Bernice Logan [Editor’s Note: In response to Bernice Logan’s June article about the Anglian Churches contributions to community life in Tangier Parish, our careful readers asked for more information about several prominent clergy she inadvertently omitted, which Ms. Logan has graciously provided below. The 150th anniversary celebration is scheduled for July 30-31.] The very first Rector of Tangier Parish was Father James Richie (1876). He was a poet and a scholar but also had the practical side of getting things done. He is responsible for building the St. James Church in Spry Bay. He wrote a book of Poems to help finance that goal. (If any parishioner has a copy of his book, the Celebration Committee would welcome making it available for viewing during our celebration.) The Reverend Thomas Turner came to the Parish in 1932. He was a jovial priest from Newfoundland, as were many of the Anglican clergy on the Eastern Shore. Reverend Turner was remembered for his unique approach to raising money for the parish. He organized stage plays that were performed by Parishioners. The money was badly needed, and those who performed still remember their seven months of fame. I received several reprimands for my memory lapse from the Theater Aficionados.
