Keeping Fish Farms Out-- Again

Letter to the Editor The Provincial Government has granted Cermaq Canada, a fully owned subsidiary of the giant Japanese industrial company Mitsubishi, four options to lease sites in the Chedabucto Bay and St Mary’s region for Marine based Fish Farms. BUT this is just the start. The company hopes to obtain about 20 salmon farm licenses in Nova Scotia.

Bursary Auction Thank You

Letter to the editor The Clipper Gallery held a silent auction on Saturday, March 9that the Old School Gathering Place, Musquodoboit Harbour. This event was held to raise bursary funds to assist an Eastern Shore District High School student in attending NSCAD (Nova Scotia College of Art and Design) in the fall of 2019. Student applications will be accepted in the spring, and the successful applicant will receive $1000. The event raised almost $1500. The remainder will be held over and added to the proceeds of the 2020 event.

Foster ran through the litany of rural-put-downs by urban elites that we are all already too familiar with. But she also touched on some more recent ideas about how rural communities could create locally-based economies that don’t depend on the old boom-and-bust cycle of extractive industries like coal or gold, or the destruction of renewable resources like clear-cutting forests.

Thankfully us that live here complained and the situation was finally rectified 2 weeks later. Again DFO was abusing our waters; apparently an American company sold their license, and the new company was unaware of the heavy harvesting of the rockweed that already took place. I wonder how this will affect the baby lobster the lobster fishery in later years?

APES Position on the MPA

What is the Position of the ASSOCIATION for the PRESERVATION of the EASTERN SHORE (APES) on the Proposed Eastern Shore Islands Marine Protected Area (MPA)? The Association for the Preservation of the Eastern Shore was formed in February 2012 when communities on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia became aware of and concerned about applications to establish marine-based fish farms in our harbours. We came to the conclusion that this industry would not only pollute our harbours but also threaten our backbone industries of lobster fishing and tourism. We organized, worked hard, spoke with one voice, and won.
