Myatt Wins Big at US College Cycling

By Richard Bell Musquodoboit Harbour cycling phenom Mackenzie Myatt has been tearing up cross country tracks all fall, topping things off with a medals trifecta at the 2017 USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike Nationals in Missoula, Montana. She won a gold medal in the Varsity Women's Collegiate XC National Championship race on October 20, beating her closest competitor by more than a whopping two minutes, finishing the two-lap race in 20:44:7.

New BMX Track on the Shore

By Gina Dunn  There’s a new recreation facility on the Eastern Shore thanks to the volunteer members of the West Chezzetcook/ Grand Desert Recreation Society. The society manages the St Therese Community Centre in Grand Desert and has decided to build a new BMX bike park there complete with gazebo and a community park walking trail. The society’s mandate is to improve and provide recreational opportunities for all ages in the area.

Butcher Brothers Build Racing Careers

By Jill Bellefontaine  Brothers Cole Butcher (20), and Jarrett Butcher (18) of Porters Lake have been racing cars and winning for the last 12 years of their lives. Their involvement in the sport came about through their father, Darrin Butcher, who raced before the brothers were born. The boys’ father aided in bringing the first Bandolero cars (entry-level racing cars built like miniature stock cars) to Nova Scotia in 2006.

Crosby Gives Back At Hockey School

By Jill Bellefontaine Sophie Storey, an eleven-year-old from Porters Lake, was in disbelief and jumping for joy when she got the news that she was one of the lucky 160 kids chosen to participate in this year’s Sidney Crosby Hockey School in Cole Harbour Place. Storey has been playing hockey on the Eastern Shore for more than 6 years and plans on continuing to play for many years to come. In addition to Storey, at least two other Eastern Shore players were at the school, goalies Will Cole and Jackson Murphy.

Women’s 1st Annual 48 Hour Ball Tournament

By Jill Bellefontaine The 1st annual Women’s 48-hour ball tournament took place in Sheet Harbour, Nova Scotia over the weekend of July 15. Women of all ages gathered from across the Eastern Shore and beyond to take part in this event. The tournament consisted of 14 different teams of women. The ball games were played at two different fields throughout the weekend. Saturday evening there was a skills competition that consisted of running, throwing, pitching, and a home run derby.

Small Town Athletes Go Big At Canada Games

By: Jill Bellefontaine    The 2017 Summer Canada Games are underway from July 28th  to August 13th  in Winnipeg, MB. This year marks the Canada Games’ 50th  anniversary. Nova Scotia sent a total of 425 athletes, coaches, and trainers to the games. Of those 425 people, 14 come from  our local area (sorry if we missed anyone, hometowns are listed on the Canada games website - www.teamnovascotia.ca). We were able to touch bases with 7 of them before they took off for the Games. Below is a list recognizing these athletes and coaches and their dedication to the sports they love.

Walking Your Way to Fitness

By Pippa Wood Walking your way to a healthy lifestyle is beneficial in many ways. Walking is free, with the added bonus of being good for both body and soul. Remember to wear good walking shoes, a hat and sunscreen, and bring along a bottle of water (especially important on a hot day). You may want to consider an orthotic assessment if a foot ailment is preventing you from enjoying a good walk. If the weather is too cold or rainy, why not walk a circuit or two around an indoor shopping mall. You may be surprised how quickly your steps add up while running errands and doing house and yard work. It all counts towards improving your health with an active lifestyle!
