In Memoriam: Maurice E Holloway

Maurice E Holloway, the legendary pirate, passed away peacefully on December 19, 2019 in Ottawa at the age of 96. He was accompanied and comforted by his life partner, Fan, and his granddaughter Alexandra by his bedside. Born in Swindon, England in 1923, Maurice came to Canada after he served as a pilot in the Royal Air Force in WWII. His passion was always his beloved island and community in Nova Scotia, where he found himself in peace and harmony with nature. Lake Echo Society Meeting Notice

In a notice of a special meeting on Thursday, December 5 at 7:00 pm, The Lake Echo Community Recreation Society has issued a stark request for new volunteers: “To keep the Centre alive, we need help. And, we need it by the end of December.”[emphasis in original] Volunteers run the Community Centre, which provides the community with a wealth of programs and services. And like many volunteer-run organizations, there comes a time when continuing to operate depends on recruiting more volunteers. Without more volunteers, the Society will have to consider whether or not it can continue to operate. Here is the Society's notice:

URB HEARING ON C&D DUMP POSTPONED The powerful UItility and Review Board has postponed the hearing on the Kiann Management (Lawrence Bellefontaine) appeal of HRM's rejection of its request to rezone a parcel of land on Highway 7 in Porters Lake for use as a construction & demolition debris waste processing facility. The Concerned Residents of Porters Lake, Lake Echo, Preston and Mineville Areas had been mobilizing opponents to testify at this hearing.

Confusion Over Causeway Development

By Richard Bell People around Greenough Drive in Porters Lake recently filed petitions with HRM City Council and the Legislature opposing plans to build on a narrow causeway that links Greenough Drive to the Porters Lake Provincial Park. But in a surprising twist, the Cooperator has discovered that the two owners of the contested property were not only unaware of the petition drive, but had never talked to any of the opponents, and did not plan to interfere with walking access to the park or with use of the boat ramp.
