The three-day celebration of the 180th anniversary of the East Preston United Baptist Church got off to a rousing start with a full church “Gospel/Variety Concert.” Rev. Debbie Simmonds was the evening’s MC for one sharp, crisp performance after another that had the crowd on their feet and singing along to well-loved songs. Performers included the Praise Dancers, Susan Hansen, The Frazier Family, Lyris Daye, The Tollivers, Trynda Thomas, Rev. Kadel Brown, and the church’s own Young Adults with the closing song, “My God Can Do Anything.”

The Halifax County Exhibition reopened from August 17-20, continuing a tradition that began in 1884l. Almost all of the familiar standbys were in place, from ox-pulls to quilting, with all your favorite fair food, like caramel apples and strawberry shortcake.

The community group North Preston’s Future sponsored an Emancipation Day celebration in North Preston on Saturday, August 13 at the North Preston Community Centre. On stage entertainment featured local musicians, with vendors selling burgers, fries, curried chicken, ribs, and Jamaican beef patties.

If you have ever travelled through Oyster Pond, you probably noticed the Inukshuk sculpture perched on the edge of the ocean. The fact that it has stood strong in that spot for fifty years is due to the talents of its creator, excavator artist Jimmy Kidson. Kidson lost his battle with cancer in December 2021. In interviews, Kidson's wife Lynda, along with his friend and client Allan Banks, owner of Harbour Breezes Daylilies, offered insight into the man behind this Inukshuk.
