Light the Night Walk
The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC) sponsors an annual “Light the Night Walk” to raise funds and awareness. This year on October 22, there will be a short “Light the Night Walk” starting at the home of Allan Gaskin, 1763 East Petpeswick Road, starting at 6:45PM.
Gaskin is one of the Society’s two “honoured heroes” in this part of Atlantic Canada for 2022.
Gaskin says that he “can’t overstate the support we have received from the LLSC. It is like the feel of a warm sweater on a cool day.” Over the years, Gaskin says that he has “learned that one of the most valuable aspects of life is found in our relationships. I have been overwhelmed by the generosity, kindness, and love of so many people and for that I have immense gratitude.”
The East Petpeswick team is called “This Shining Night”. Donations can be made by going to https://www.lightthenight.ca/ clicking on “donate” and searching the team’s name.

Jimmy Kidson's Landscape Legacy
By Jennifer Deacon
If you have ever travelled through Oyster Pond, you probably noticed the Inukshuk sculpture perched on the edge of the ocean. The fact that it has stood strong in that spot for fifty years is due to the talents of its creator, excavator artist Jimmy Kidson. Kidson lost his battle with cancer in December 2021. In interviews, Kidson's wife Lynda, along with his friend and client Allan Banks, owner of Harbour Breezes Daylilies, offered insight into the man behind this Inukshuk.

There was some sort of enchantment in the air when Jackie Barkhouse and Monika McEwen were brought together. "We met through craft shows and had an instant connection,” Barkhouse told me in an interview. “At that time, I had my business, Saltwater Soul Inspired, and Monika was running Monika McEwen Art Dolls. We believe in Mother Nature and the wonders that she provides us, and we believe that we all have magic inside us. Things like the faeries have always been of interest because they were in the stories and songs I grew up hearing from my Irish father."

In Memoriam
With the recent losses to the community of Austin Mannette and Kim Young, we would like to offer condolences to their family and friends. Both of these people gave so much to their Shore communities. Austin’s nursery was one of the Cooperator’s most loyal advertisers. We loved talking politics with him while we picked up flowers for the office’s flower boxes. We came to appreciate Kim’s dynamism and her caring concern for her community early in the paper’s history when she and her husband Mike spearheaded the community fight against HRM’s sudden enforcement of a 100-foot road frontage rule. They are missed already.
