On a recent podcast from the Strand Bookstore (www.strandbooks.com) featuring Margaret Atwood in conversation with Rebecca Solnit, they discussed Solnit’s recent book, Orwell’s Roses, which I have mentioned in a recent column. During this conversation, the concept of “an inventory of pleasures” came up.
Orwell himself made reference to the modern concept of pleasure in an essay entitled “Pleasure Spots” published in 1946. He described the idea of a modern pleasure spot – a kind of resort or vacation hotel - as having the following characteristics:
“a) one is never alone;
b) one never does anything for oneself;
c) one is never within sight of wild vegetation or natural objects of any kind;
d) light and temperature are always artificially regulated;
e) one is never out of the sound of music.” (The Orwell Foundation, “Pleasure Spots”)
He goes on to argue, “Man needs warmth, society, leisure, comfort and security; he also needs solitude, creative work and the sense of wonder…the highest happiness does not lie in relaxing, resting, playing poker, drinking and making love simultaneously.” Solnit describes the great pleasure Orwell took in gardening, fishing, caring for animals – experiences rooted in the natural world and in small, everyday activities.
And so we come to the idea of “an inventory of pleasures,” a list of the activities or experiences that provide enjoyment, comfort, a sense of security and ease. This list can be used as a personalized “go-to” resource to lighten feelings of anxiety, restlessness, discouragement, or low mood. Anyone can create such a list, though each person’s list will be different.
Here’s my list; I challenge you to think about and create your own “inventory of pleasures”.

-
The satisfying feeling of tiredness after a long walk.
