Two Tunics, the free clothing shop in the basement of St. Philip-Neri Church in Musquodoboit Harbour, received a $5,000 grant from the East Coast Credit Union.
The project operates under the parish of Saint John of the Cross in East Chezzetcook. Since they opened the doors on November 7, 2022, Two Tunics has filled the church basement with shoes, clothing, and winter jackets for infants, children, and adults.
Marianne Nash, who has led the effort, said that they had had collected clothes at the Musquodoboit Harbour Public Library, at Catholic and other churches on the Eastern Shore, and at St. Philip-Neri. She said that while the original volunteers were from the parish, they had been adding volunteers from the community, and had 19 people staffing the shop for four days a week.
Charlotte Jewer, Credit Union’s Community Engagement Specialist, said that the co-op set up the East Cast CUCares Community Grants program last year. “This year, we had $100,000,” Jewer told the Cooperator. “We received 101 entries, and there were 11 winners. We’re hoping to do even more next year.”
Nash said that the group had also received $5,000 from Community Services, and $750 from the Eastern Shore Community Health Board. One of the first thing they will purchase are some coat stands to replace the current jury-rigged setup, with coats hanging from the stack of table chairs on one side of the room.
