The Railway Station comes to life this month with a busy line up of events and projects. Opening day is scheduled for Monday, June 17th. The Museum is fortunate to receive funding from both the Provincial and Federal governments to hire students for the summer. The first few days, staff will be on site setting up the Visitor Information Centre, getting the displays ready for the museum and welcoming its first tourists of the season.
As part of our Opening week, the Railway Station will be hosting a special day for local businesses on Thursday, June 20th. You’re encouraged to drop in, meet staff and talk about your plans for the upcoming season. It is also an opportunity to drop off any promotional material or brochures that staff can pass onto visitors to our area.
Saturday is the kick off to the new season. Visit the new Whistle Stop Craft Shop located in our freight shed. Stop by the Polar Bear Express Ice Cream shop and help them celebrate their 20thanniversary. The Bandwagon Food truck will be on hand as well as Sober Island Brewery with samples of their Blueberry Express Beer. They will also be making a special presentation to the Museum.
Each month we will also host a social tea so you can share stories and ideas. Check out our website at www.mhrailwaystation.com for more details and notices of events throughout the summer.
Projects on the go at the Museum includes repair and upgrades to the clock, work on the caboose, snowplow and shunt, completion of the painting started last Fall and repair of the platform. We will also be reaching out to the community to gather your memories of the Railway Station before the tracks were pulled up. We’ll share some of those memories in future articles. If you would like to volunteer at the Museum, drop by and fill out an application.
