Stirling Cashman Mason (1921-1944) as one of sixteen children born to James and Myrtle Mason in Tangier, Nova Scotia. Cashman went to a one-room school in Tangier where a single teacher taught 60 students in eleven grades. He did very well academically and when it was time to enter grade eleven, his uncle, Professor Guy Mason, offered to take him to Truro to finish high school, on a path to his goal of becoming an Anglican Clergyman.

An estimated 600 people turned out for the Forest Funeral march in downtown Halifax on October 19. The marchers wound their way from Grand Parade Square through the city to a rally in front of Province House. The event was an expression of the growing outrage over the failure of the province to reduce the devastating forest losses caused by clear-cutting, whole tree harvesting, and herbicide spraying.

In the community of Porters Lake, on the Myra Road, there is a small church, St Marks Anglican, within sight of the Porters Lake narrows. The church has a small cemetery on a gentle east-facing slope. Directly opposite on the other side of the road is Pixie Keizer’s Garage, a good landmark if you are looking for St Marks (some might say it’s just the opposite).

On a cloudy day in October, I visited the colourful home of the multi-talented visual artist and founder of the Yellow Balloon Tour, Minaz Jantz. Her home with tall windows and ceilings and olive green walls is full of Minaz’s art: geometric pen and ink drawings, quirky surreal still life pastels, various pet portraits, watercolours of dancing people and flowers, and nudes and mixed media collages incorporating embroidery and foils. The beauty of her work is that it is hard to categorize because her interests are so eclectic and wide-ranging. She is an explorer in everything creative, which makes her life and art a colourful, extraordinary collage.

Musquodoboit Harbour cycling phenom Mackenzie Myatt has been tearing up cross country tracks all fall, topping things off with a medals trifecta at the 2017 USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike Nationals in Missoula, Montana. She won a gold medal in the Varsity Women's Collegiate XC National Championship race on October 20, beating her closest competitor by more than a whopping two minutes, finishing the two-lap race in 20:44:7.
