Introduction: As far as Evelyn Muise (a retired teacher who now lives in Yarmouth) knew, her uncle Oswald Bellefontaine (from West Chezzetcook) had been killed landing on Juno Beach on D-Day in June 1944. But in an extraordinary turn of events on a trip to France in 1984, she learned what had really happened to her uncle. Here is her story in her own words.

What is the Position of the ASSOCIATION for the PRESERVATION of the EASTERN SHORE (APES) on the Proposed Eastern Shore Islands Marine Protected Area (MPA)?
The Association for the Preservation of the Eastern Shore was formed in February 2012 when communities on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia became aware of and concerned about applications to establish marine-based fish farms in our harbours. We came to the conclusion that this industry would not only pollute our harbours but also threaten our backbone industries of lobster fishing and tourism. We organized, worked hard, spoke with one voice, and won.

Opponents of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans proposal to creation of an Eastern Shore Islands Marine Protected Area have gained serious momentum over the last month, raising doubt over how DFO will gain the necessary level of community support that all MPAs are supposed to have. Pictured above are the U13 Girls and the U13 Boys Porters Lake Soccer Teams. Both teams placed 4th in their Provincial Championship held September 8th and 9th. Both teams fought hard all weekend winning in shoot outs to move on to the semifinals. The girls had a heart-breaking loss in the last 5 seconds of the bronze medal game. The boys lost a close 3-1 against Thunder FC in their bronze medal game.
Porters Lake Soccer hosted this years U13 Provincial Soccer Championships and are becoming well known for a well organized and enjoyable weekend.

The announcement in mid-September by the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq Chiefs rejecting any limitation of indigenous fishing in Marine Protected Areas (MPA) has added another hurdle for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans proposal to create an MPA along the Eastern Shore. The Mi’Kmaq chiefs filed their objection in Ottawa with a federal hearing process designed to set national standards for MPAs.
