INTRODUCTION
The Old School Gathering Place has been undergoing some significant changes in the last two weeks. The Old School has played an important role in the life of the Musquodoboit Harbour community. As a community-focused newspaper, one of the Eastern Shore Cooperator’s fundamental responsibilities is to keep the community informed, so that members of the community have the information they need to understand, evaluate, and influence decisions that affect the life of our communities.
This story poses a difficult question in journalistic practice. My wife, Karen Bradley, has been the chair of the Old School Board since June of 2018. On Friday March 1, a single board member met with Karen and notified her that some of the Executive Committee plus two members were asking for her immediate resignation as board chair.
As a journalist, I decided that the most even-handed approach to this situation was to offer Karen and the OSB the opportunity to provide the Cooperator with whatever statements they would like to share about their understanding of the OSB’s request for Karen’s resignation. These statements appear below, as they were submitted, unedited. Both statements were prepared independently, so that neither party got to view the other’s statement before preparing their own.
I appreciate the willingness of all parties to cooperate with the Cooperator to provide the members of the Old School community with a better understanding of the current situation.
