Transportation, Gardening, Information, and Food
Since the Old School Community Gathering Place opened in 2011, we have developed more and more programs to improve the lives of everyone living on the Eastern Shore. Our current programs include the Wellbeing HUBS, Youth Employment Skills, Eastern Shore Mental Health, affordable housing, the food pantry, Enhance through Dance, Pride, Tai Chi, and Fibre Friends. We have also learned how participating in these programs provides people with a place to access skills, knowledge, and community resources.
On May 5th we will be launching the TGIF Club to make it easier for people to take full advantage of all our programs. The TGIF Club will be meeting on Fridays at the Old School, twice a month from noon to 2pm on the first and third Friday. At the end of each Friday’s Club, members will collect food boxes, information handouts, and coffee cards.
Club members will have access to:
-
The Food Pantry: Offers an assortment of fresh produce and canned goods.
-
Financial Literacy: Information beyond basic budgeting and navigation of opportunities.
-
Grief/Bereavement: Support to deal with complicated feelings around loss.
-
Surefooted Program: Nature walks.
-
Community Garden: A free garden bed with supplies and instructions.
-
Transportation is available if needed.
The Surefooted Program is our newest offering. Over the years, we had become acutely aware of the need for programming that included time spent in nature. With generous funding from the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia’s Community Grant, we will be offering a 12-week program that includes regular nature walks with a trained guide, support with setting personal goals, and keeping a journal.
And with additional funding from HRM’s JustFOOD Food Action Plan, TGIF Club Members will have free access to one of our community garden beds, with supplies and instructions for learning to grow your own food.
For more information and/or to reserve a spot in this exciting new offering, please contact the Old School at 902-889-2735, or email [email protected].
