I take great joy in knowing a woman whom I like to call a keeper of unwanted angels. She’s a foster mother, a person approved by the Children’s Aid Society to take children into her home, often on a temporary or as-needed basis from some crisis situation. These children have inherited life circumstances they have no control over or part in making.

Students and parents in North Preston have been taking to the streets and the Internet to protest the unexpected firing of a beloved teacher at Nelson Whynder Elementary by the Halifax Regional School Board (HRSB). The teacher, Joida Tynes-Simons, has been teaching in and around North Preston for more than 30 years.

The Eastern Shore District High school-replacement pot continues to simmer away. Over the last two years, the Community Campus Vision Association (CCVA) has succeeded in getting the Halifax Regional School Board to include replacing ESDH on its official list of recommendations to the province.

What would you do if the Royal Bank of Canada gave you $150 to spend on anything you wanted to improve life on the Eastern Shore? With her $150, Taylor Keizer put together a sold-out Paint Nite fundraiser at the Old School on February 4 to raise money for Eastern Shore Mental Health.
“I was beyond pleased by the turnout,” said Keizer. “I would have been pleased to sell just one ticket!” The event raised almost $900 for ESMH.
