Central Nova’s MP Sean Fraser recently won “Best Orator” in the annual Maclean’s Parliamentarians of the Year Awards and was one of three finalists for “Rising Star.” The magazine asks Members of Parliament to submit nominations for 8 different categories, and uses a process that gives members extra credit for votes from members of other parties.

AutoWIKI, a Locally Developed App With Worldwide Potential
Local mother and son, Delphine du Toit and Nik Edmiidz, have created an app called AutoWIKI, a travelling tour guide that uses your GPS location to tell you stories about the places around you. The app is set to be published out of open Beta state by the end of the month, but it is open to download on Android and iOS devices now.

Feral Cat Grant Program a Purring Success

Halifax’s feral cat overpopulation problem may soon be in the past thanks to a collaborative effort between the city, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty (SPCA), and Spay Day Society implementing a Trap, Neuter, Release (TNR) method. Now four years into the city’s five-year grant program, the SPCA and Spay Day Society praise the grant program as a massive success.

The Nova Scotia Salmon Association (NSSA) is conducting a “Community Local Knowledge Survey” as part of a provincial-wide project to protect a number of endanger aquatic species by improving the health of eight watersheds, including three along the Eastern Shore: the Musquodoboit River, the Moser River, and the West River in Sheet Harbour.

Hannah Kent Steps Up Her Game

Hannah Kent will be taking a major step forward in her lacrosse career in the fall of 2021, when the 17-year old joins Niagara University’s Purple Eagles women’s lacrosse team. Niagara offered Kent a scholarship to play in the U.S. National Collegiate Athletic Association’s top college division, and she is committed to the 2022 season.

COVID-19 hit everyone in a multitude of life-changing ways, and Food Banks have been working harder than ever to keep communities together. Between February and June 2020, unemployment in Nova Scotia grew from 7.8% to 13%. Many people in need are visiting the Food Bank for the first time. At the same time, fear of the virus has kept others at home.
