The Kentville Canada Cup on August 18th was a special race. It was the first time I have raced in Nova Scotia all year, so it was the only time my family and wonderfully supportive cycling community could see me in action. I spend so much time away racing with a very tight-knit support system that I forget how big racing is at home. There’s nothing like a home-crowd and I can’t stress that enough. It felt like everyone who watched me grow up racing was out cheering.

In a phone interview from Norway, Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Keith Colwell laid out an expansive vision of the future of aquaculture in Nova Scotia.
The trip was Colwell’s third to Norway. Based on what he had seen over the last 6 years in Norway, he predicted aquaculture could transform the economy of Nova Scotia.

After more than two years of contentious debate about a proposed Marine Protected Area (MPA) along the Eastern Shore, DFO Minister Jonathan Wilkinson told the Cooperator in an interview that the MPA process was “effectively suspended.” The only exception was the completion of the risk assessment of finfish farms that had been underway for some time and would be completed shortly.

Quick Overview: The federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans announced on March 22, 2018 that a 2,000 square km area off the Eastern Shore as a new “Area of Interest” (AOI) under the provisions of the Oceans Act Marine Protected Area (MPA) program. The proposal encompasses the waters around the 30km of islands between Clam Harbour and Mushaboom. Since then, a fierce struggle has emerged, birthing a new society, the Association of Eastern Shore Communities Practicing Environment and Historical Access (AESC-PEHA)that opposes going forward with the current MPA process. AESC-PEHA has held several well-attended meetings, and has plastered Highway 7 with large and small NO-MPA signs.The Eastern Shore Fisherman's Protective Association has also come out against the MPA as proposed by DFO.

On June 22, several hundred people gathered in Tangier to bid farewell after 65 years to Lakefront Consolidated Elementary School (which began in 1954 as Central Consolidated High School). Inside the school, the multi-generational crowd poured over displays of class photos over the years, yearbooks, and other memorabilia, with the occasional burst of delight at meeting a classmate from long ago in the crowd.
