A group looking for a location for a whale sanctuary has found its quest getting entangled in the bitter controversy over DFO’s proposed Eastern Shore Islands Marine Protected Area (MPA). Opponents of the MPA are likely to raise their concerns this evening (Thursday) at a presentation by the Whale Sanctuary Project in Sheet Harbour at 6:30 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion, 25566 Highway 7. DFO issued a statement in the late afternoon on February 7 to the Cooperator saying that there is no connection between the two initiatives.

The dates of the trip are now February 8 to February 16; the department is still working on the list of participants, other than the Minister. The number of participants may be fewer than 18. The province will be contributing $5000 per industry representative on the trip. All participants will be traveling economy class.]
In an announcement that will surely be the delight of cartoonists across Nova Scotia, CBC reported at 6:00 AM Saturday that Nova Scotia Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Keith Colwell will be leading a fishing industry trip with 17 other Nova Scotians to Tasmania at a cost of $100,000. Participants will be looking at marine protected areas, aquaculture, and a Tasmanian market program for the native rock lobsters.

It may not sound like a big deal to you, but the new sound panels in Seaforth Community Hall have transformed the room’s acoustics.
And how bad was it? Before, when there was a party or event at the hall, all the sound (music, people talking, etc) would bounce around the room, off the ceiling and all the glass windows, making it hard to hear the person right next to you. Order of Canada Award winner and local musician Gordon Stobe wouldn’t play there—until now.

There was plenty of action at this year’s Preston Gives Back Community Charity Basketball Tournament on December 29 and 30. The bleachers at the East Preston Recreation Centre were full, as spectators watched teenagers and former star players showing off a move or two, while a DJ at center court kept people moving between games.

Eastern Shore music lovers and songwriters will get a special treat later this month when Jim Henman appears at the Old School Community Gathering Place on January 26. Henman, a member of the Canadian Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame as one of the founding members of April Wine, will be reaching out to the audience to work with him on creating entirely new songs.
Henman calls this collaborative approach “organic songwriting.

Supporters of the Eastern Shore Lifestyles Centre in Sheet Harbour held a meeting in mid-January with Halifax officials to present their case for incorporating a new library into the Lifestyles Centre. Participants at the meeting included Mayor Mike Savage, Halifax Public Library Board chair Tara Gault, and Åsa Kachan, chief librarian and CEO of the Halifax Public Libraries.

Education Minister Zach Churchill has yet to release any information about the new site selection process that his department will use to select sites for new schools, like the replacement for Eastern Shore District High. The Community Campus Vision Association pushed hard to start the site selection this fall, but Churchill failed to act. There have been several projected release dates, but the date continues to recede into the future.
