Opponents of the Kiann Management Limited’s rezoning request (Case 19800) to build a construction & demolition (C&D) recycling plant on Highway 7 in Porters Lake are hoping that HRM Councillors will finally reject the proposal at the April 4 meeting of the Harbour East Marine Drive Community Council. The meeting starts at 6pm at the Lake Echo Community Center.

The Cooperator is presenting a FREE screening of the powerful documentary, The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil on March 2 from 2 pm-3:30 pm at the Musquodoboit Harbour Library. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, Cuba lost its supply of cheap oil. Cuban agriculture was based on the familiar system of large farms dependent on oil, pesticides and fertilizers. But without cheap oil, the country was in danger of not being able to feed itself.

On April 4, the HRM Harbour East Marine Drive Community Council (HEMDC) will hold a meeting on the HRM staff report on this proposal, Case #19800, at the Lake Echo Community Centre at 6pm.

In the Cooperator’s March article “Who’s In Charge? Community-Managed MPAs?,” I mentioned that DFO’s website referred to at least one MPA where DFO was “co-managing” the MPA with a First Nation’s community, Paulatuk in the Northwest Territories.
Here is the question I sent to DFO: Does the use of the term "co-manage" mean that DFO has formally ceded some authority to the community of Paulatuk? In other MPAs, DFO is clearly in charge, although there may be a community-based advisory committee of some sort. I want to know if co-managing means more than simply advising DFO.

Maureen Legg has been an important vendor at the Sunday Musquodoboit Harbour Farmer's Market for many years. She offers a selection of fresh meat (beef, pork, free range chicken, smoked meat products, sausages and pies) from her family farm in Middle Musquodoboit.
It's a lot of work to bring fresh meat to the market, but it's a valued service and she draws regular customers each week. She can also be found at the New Glasgow Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings, in Halifax on Tuesday evenings and the meat shop on Fridays.
